2019 Peer Mentees Application

UNSW Sydney is committed to ensuring that all students are provided with appropriate assistance during their transition to university.  Therefore the School of Optometry and Vision Science would like to invite you to participate in a peer support program for first year Optometry and Vision Science programme.

The aim of the program is to assist first year students in their transition to University.  Adjusting from high school to university can be difficult, particularly in Optometry where most of the courses you complete in first session of first year are servicing courses (basic sciences).  You may be left wondering what these courses have to do with Optometry and whether, perhaps, you have made the right choice.  Students in the latter years of the program now understand the importance of having the foundation of these disciplines and applying them to what they do now.  To this end, your peer mentor is a fourth year Optometry student who we hope will assist in your transition to university life by passing on their knowledge and tips.

You will have the opportunity to meet with your mentor at least once per week for the first eight weeks of term one.

You are encouraged to participate in this programme.

Hello! My name's Adrian. I've worked at Specsavers and offer private tutoring. I became a peer mentor, because I want to provide younger students with valuable knowledge and want them to have an enjoyable journey without making the mistakes I made whilst studying Optometry. Through various experiences, I understood myself better and grew a strong desire to make a significant contribution to the society and help people whenever possible. My hobbies include travelling with family, socialising with close friends, meeting new people, watching meaningful dramas/movies, and stock trading. I look forward to guiding my mentees!

However, being a peer mentee in first year has provided me with the support and connections I need in order to flourish at uni. I hope to share these experiences with you and help ease your transition into life as an optometry student. I look forward to meeting
