In addition to the clinics at the UNSW Optometry Clinic, there are several external Satellite Clinics.

  • The Low Vision Clinic is a joint venture between UNSW and Guide Dogs NSW/ACT. The clinic was first established in 1990 and has been actively serving the people of Sydney since. Our clinic provides expert magnification and optical aid provision, mobility services and referrals to other organisations when required.

The clinic provides a combination of an orthoptist, optometrist and access to orientation and mobility specialist expertise. Follow up support is also provided to check on the use of vision aids. Final year students from the School of Optometry &Vision Science, UNSW are actively involved in the assessments done at the Low Vision Clinic during the university teaching year. This collaboration between UNSW and Guide Dogs NSW/ACT ensures better low vision services in the general community.

If you'd like additional information, go to the Guide Dogs NSW/ACT website.

  • Vision Australia runs satellite clinics in several Sydney and regional centres. The clinics are multidisciplinary, including for example optometrists, orthoptists and low vision case workers and provide a full range of low vision magnifiers, non-optical aids, training and advice.

  • Stewart House is a preventorium. Children who attend Stewart House are normally in situations where they need a break from problems at home or school. The children attend over a twelve-day period, where different educational and recreational activities are organised. The children also get a full medical check-up while there. This includes medical, dental and optometric assessments and, if necessary, treatment and/or referral to an appropriate health care practitioner.

UNSW School of Optometry & Vision Science  provides vision assessments for all children visiting Stewart House. The visual examination is a free service conducted by optometry students, under the supervision of experienced staff optometrists from UNSW. During university holidays, the staff optometrists from the School of Optometry & Vision Science provide vision care. These clinics operate on Wednesday and Thursday mornings during school term.

The visual examination includes measurement of the child's visual acuity, determination of any refractive error, assessment of how well the two eyes work together, colour vision testing and ocular health assessment. Spectacles are dispensed when indicated.,If eye exercises  or further assessment is required, a letter is sent to the parent or guardian, advising them of the visual problem and the recommended course of action.

You can find additional information on the Stewart House website.

  • Patients attending the POW Diabetes Centre have an eye examination conducted by UNSW Optometry Clinic staff and optometry students. Being co-located at the POW Diabetes Centre allows patients to have easy and convenient access to eye health assessments. Collaboration with the POW Eye Clinic ensures referrals for those in need of urgent treatment.
