UNSW School of Optometry and Vision Science warmly welcomes Dr Sheela Kumaran to our team. Sheela will be working with Professors Lisa Keay and Konrad Pesudovs in the public health space as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow.
Sheela has a research focus on patient reported outcome measures, quality of life and psychometric evaluation. Her PhD, which was conferred in May 2020 (Flinders University), evaluated the quality of life impacts of amblyopia and strabismus on adults living in Australia and India. Based on the findings, she developed and validated psychometrically advanced item banks to measure the impacts reliably.
Sheela was the recipient of the South Australian Governor’s award for ‘Academic Excellence in postgraduate research’ instituted by Study Adelaide (2019). She received her undergraduate and postgraduate degree in Optometry from the Elite School of Optometry, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, India. Prior to relocating to Australia in 2016, she worked as an Optometrist in an independent practice and taught Optometry courses in several Institutions as a visiting lecturer.
