The 8th International Conference on the Tear Film and Ocular Surface (TFOS) was held between the 7th and 10th September in Montpellier, France, with a large contingent of staff attending and presenting from the UNSW School of Optometry and Vision Science. A number of higher degree students were awarded travel grants to attend the conference and present their posters.
The program included the 6th Claes Dohlman Conference Address by Dr Janine Clayton from the National Institute of Health, as well as debates on topical issues such as ‘which is the biggest risk factor for dry eye disease: Meibomian gland dysfunction or contact lens discomfort’.
UNSW’s Professor Eric Papas debated against Dr Reiko Arita of the University of Tokyo on whether contact lens wear causes Meibomian gland dysfunction. Professors Fiona Stapleton and Mark Willcox presented the findings of the TFOS dry eye workshop (DEWS) II and early-mid career researchers Dr Maria Markoulli and Dr Blanka Golebiowski gave updates on the TFOS Contact Lens Discomfort workshop.
