Outreach: SES Collaboration for our Vision Science Researchers

A team of UNSW School of Optometry and Vision Science academic researchers led by Associate Professor Sieu Khuu travelled to Narooma on the NSW east coast last weekend in an effort to engage with the SES on the science of finding things in the Australian bush. Rugged terrain and variation in the type and density of foliage pose real challenges in the task of visually searching for evidence when searching for those who have been lost and need to be found.

The researchers (Associate Professor Sieu Khuu, Dr Vanessa Honson and Dr Juno Kim) met with officials of the area command and will continue to engage through experimental research that will hopefully inform best practice in coordinating searches to optomise the likelihood of their success in future.
